What can I expect to do in this role?

In this role, you will:

  • provide analytical support and training to regional planning teams to incorporate quantitative resource analysis techniques for habitat, landscape, ecosystem management, wood supply assessments and socio-economic impact assessments in the development of resource management and land use plans
  • deliver analytical information and support to determine measures of sustainability for key planning and program initiatives
  • assemble and synthesize data, promote information management principles and implement standards in support of the state of the resource reporting and management of resource inventory data


How do I qualify?

Mandatory

  • You must possess a Registered Professional Forester (RPF) designation from the Ontario Professional Foresters Association or have the ability to transfer designation from out-of-province and be able to practise professional forestry without professional supervision.


Technical expertise:

  • You have knowledge and experience with resource information systems, forest management planning systems in Ontario, resource management modelling to conduct resource modelling and perform quantitative and statistical analyses in support of the development of resource management and land use plans.
  • You have knowledge of resource and ecosystem management, integrated land use planning, forest management planning and fish/wildlife habitat modelling/dynamics to provide advice, modelling and analytical support on questions of forest ecosystem sustainability.


Interpersonal and communication skills:

  • You possess proven communication skills to produce and present technical documents to planning teams, senior managers, supervisors and to technical and non-technical audiences and to provide training to both internal and external clients.
  • You have demonstrated interpersonal, negotiation and conflict management skills to develop and maintain cooperative relationships with forest industry, other governments and recreational organizations to lead a collaborative modelling and analysis approach for wood supply, habitat, landscape and ecosystem management and facilitate resolution to complex resource management issues.


Information technology:

  • You have knowledge of, and proficiency using, operating systems, GIS based software, ArcEditor/Info, geoprocessing, integrated data analysis and Model Builder to conduct resource analysis, planning and modelling.
  • You are knowledgeable about information management policies, data management standards and information management lifecycles to organize and manage large diverse datasets.
  • You are proficient with common office productivity software, such as word processing, spreadsheets, e-mail, graphics, database management to produce technical written documents.


Analytical skills:

  • You have research, analytical and interpretative skills to perform quantitative and statistical analyses on geospatial and tabular datasets; to undertake research assignments; to assist in or lead the design of analytical frameworks/processes; and to analyze/interpret results of resource analyses.
  • You have thorough knowledge of and experience in applying current resource analyses techniques, with respect to strategic resource management planning to determine measures of sustainability for key planning and program initiatives.


Organizational skills:

  • You have demonstrated organizational skills, initiative and good judgement to carry out work assignments with minimal supervision and work cooperatively within a multi-disciplinary team environment and with external client groups.
  • You have the ability to effectively prioritize concurrent tasks in a fast paced, dynamic work environment.
